The Association
Occitanie Musées is the Association of Curators and Scientific Personnel of the Occitanie Museums. It brings together scientific staff from the Museums of France and cultural and heritage establishments in the Occitanie region. It integrates more than a hundred professionals in all areas of museum activity (management, conservation, mediation, documentation etc.). The Association is the regional arm of the AGCCPF (The national Association of curators and Museum professionals and the public heritage sites of France)

The Association

About us

  • Occitanie Musées is the Association of Curators and Scientific Personnel of Occitanie Museums. The Association brings together professionals from the Museums of France and cultural and heritage establishments in the Occitanie Region.
  • It brings together more than 150 professionals in all areas of museum activity (management, conservation, mediation, documentation, management of works, etc.)
  • The Association carries out scientific and cultural activities within the scope of the regional museographic network. In particular, it created the musees-occitanie.fr site which highlights the richness and diversity of museums and their collections on a single site bringing together more than 130 museums, the majority of which have earned the “Musée de France” designation.
  • The Association is a regional section of the AGCCPF, the National Association of Curators and Professionals of Museums and Public Heritage, France.
  • The Association benefits from the support of the DRAC Occitan and the Occitan / Pyrénées Méditerranée Regional Council for all of its activities.

Our history

The Association is the result of the merger in 2017 of the Association of Curators of Museums of Languedoc-Roussillon and the Association of Conservators of Midi-Pyrénées, created respectively in 1974 and 1984. This merger is territorial reorganization carried out in 2016 with the creation of the greater Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée region, merger of the Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées regions.

The Association is a regional section of the AGCCPF, the National Association of Curators and Professionals of Museums and Public Heritage in France, founded in 1922 and recognized as being of public utility since 1932.

Our work

The Association develops many projects to promote museums and their collections for the general public and professionals :

  • publication and organisation of the musees-occitanie.fr website presenting the museums of the region, their events and their collections and offering a unique panorama of the museographic establishments of Occitan
  • production of multimedia projects to promote museums and their collection :
    • organising  photographic campaigns within museums,
    • video clips of behind the scenes at the museums,
    • development of theme-based itineraries

The Association also plays a leading role in the museum network by facilitating interactions and encouraging the exchange of experiences and good practices between professionals :

  • provision of a professional space with discussion forum, document sharing space, etc.
  • programming of professional days to meet and discuss current issues
  • development of training courses with the CNFPT Occitan to meet the needs of museum staff

Our network

The Occitanie region has more than 130 museums spread throughout 13 departments in a hundred towns, in urban and rural areas. It is one of the leading regions in France in terms of the number of visitors per year to museums. The collections of the Occitanie museums are very diverse and cover more than fifteen major fields (archeology, fine arts, heritage and techniques, natural sciences, etc.).

The Association actively supports this rich and dynamic network of establishments by promoting connections between museums, connections between professionals and by working to disseminate museum heritage, thanks to the support of our many partners.
