Created in 1984, the ecomuseum of Mont Lozère houses a collection that represents the agricultural economy of the mid-mountains, dominated by pastoralism. Wool work, the cultivation of rye and the prevailing granite architecture have also characterized the history of this region. In addition to an exhibition space, this eco-museum is spread over an outdoor terrain made up of paths and representative sites.
Closed to the public since 2018, the permanent exhibition of the ecomuseum will soon reopen in a completely revamped form within a “Maison du mont Lozère” comprising a tourist office and a museum space.
Agro-pastoralism in its evolving, contemporary context is the common thread that runs through the new permanent exhibition. Cattle breeding and seasonal sheep herding form the backbone of the cultural landscape of this territory, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
The museum is currently closed. Reopening in 2026.
