The Lauragais Museum is located in the upper part of the old city. It overlooks the Grand Bassin and offers an exceptional view over the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenean mountain chain.
Housed on the ruins of the original foundations of the Château of Castel noù d’Ari, the museum occupies the former municipal prison, next to the Présidial building which once served as the civil and criminal courthouse. The building was commissioned in 1554 by Catherine de Medicis, Countess of Lauragais, in order to provide a base for her new Court of Appeal. Today, the mullioned windows are classified “Monuments Historiques”.
