The museum exhibits the remains found in the Castellas archaeological site. This ancient agglomeration, the seat of the Samnagenses (the Gallic people mentioned by Pliny the Elder) was founded at the beginning of the second century AD.
The Castellas agglomeration, with its series of well-preserved fortifications that cover a surface area of more than twenty hectares, is one of the largest ancient sites of its kind in the Midi – Languedoc region. It is thought to have been the main inhabited area between Nîmes and Béziers. The archaeological digs and remains found here help answer questions about the Roman influence on the Gallic site.
