Founded in 1992 by the Friends of the Museum and thereafter managed by the local regional authority, Cœur de Lomagne, the Public School Museum is housed in a former Saint-Clar schoolhouse built in 1874.
The Public School Museum in Saint-Clar had a major overhaul in 2009 and was relocated next to the famous village market under the auspices of the scientific branch of the Heritage Conservation Department.
Back to school! The museum casts its visitors back into the realm of a rural public school in the Lomagne Gers region between 1789 and 1960. The exhibition is based around a rare collection of pedagogic material (text books, photographs, diplomas and school notebooks) brought to life in an imaginative way.
It also features a model classroom and a reconstruction of the headmaster’s apartment dating from the 1930’s which evoke memories from a bygone era.
Thanks to its originality, this user-friendly museum also aims to serve the whole department with its exhibitions exploring the history of education. Additional written information and a chronological framework for the tour (with back up from the displays and exhibits) distinguish this institution from others that deal with the same subject matter in a more formal manner.
Every year, a festival is organised dedicated to the grade school diploma of yesteryear.
The Museum belongs to the Association of the Friends of the Public School and the network associated with the departmental heritage conservation and the museums of Flaran (The Gers departmental Council).
