Musée de l’Ephèbe et d’archéologie sous-marine (Underwater Archaeology)

Le Cap d'Agde | 34

Located in a verdant park at the entrance to Cap d’Agde, the Ephèbe Underwater Archaeology Museum exhibits  an exceptional collection that was put together over a span of  50 years from findings in the Golfe du Lyon, the River Herault and the Thau Lagoon. Amongst the treasures is the famous Ephèbe, a statue of Alexander the Great that dates from the eleventh century BCE . Because Agathé  the ancient Greek city dating back 2,600 years,  was a crossroads of civilisations and it gave forth extraordinary sunken riches like cargo ships containing dishes, weapons from the royal marines, maritime transport of amphoras and raw materials and  works of art.

The museum offers a visit that is divided into different sections : antique, medieval, modern, as well as a remarkable protohistory collection that comes from la Motte,  Montpénèdre and Rochelongue.  Thanks to its partnership with the D.R.A.S.S.M,  in 2019, the Museum will receive the contents of a famous 1755 shipwreck which had aboard a treasure trove of coins…

Estruscans, Greeks, Romans, Celts, Visigoths, Saracens, Vikings, Spanish, Italians all have left their mark on the history of Agathé.
