Musée des Corbières
Sigean | 11
The museum offers a broad historical overview of the Corbières from pre-history to the nineteenth century.
On the ground floor you can learn about prehistoric Moustérien during the Bronze Age.
The first floor is dedicated to archaeology collections notably those that came from the oppidum de Pech Maho which sheds invaluable light on the life of its inhabitants during the Iron Age: writing, burial rituals, craft work and Mediterranean trade.
The collections from the Gallo-Roman era come, for the most part, from cremation sites and graves. The Early Middle Age is represented through several funerary relics from the sixth century like the Goth earrings that came from the Aspres cemetery.
The exhibition Corbières : border or thoroughfare? looks at the late Middle Age and the Modern Age by examining the changes on the frontier between the French Kingdom and Aragon from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century.
And finally the survey is completed with an overview of the various trades linked to local resources salt mining, fishing, wine making…) that allow a glimpse into day-to-day life from the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
