Museum Information

Musée du Fer et de la Forge (Iron and Forge)

Montgailhard | 09

On the site of the former Montgailhard tilt-hammer forge that was converted into a tool factory in the nineteenth century, the Forges de Pyrène reveal a fascinating regional heritage. There were 130 trades associated with the forge at the time. The museum has a vast collection of 6500 tools and machines and they give frequent workshops led by local craftsmen.

Amongst the exhibits that center around a hydraulic tilt-hammer forge, the Iron and Forge Museum pays tribute to the various activities associated with metallurgy in the Ariège. From the iron mines in Rancié to the nail factories in Barguillière the history of this once-great industry and the highly skilled workers who developed it are celebrated.
