From the Iberians to Picasso
The Goya Museum is the only Spanish art museum in France showing works from the creation of ancient Spain through to the twentieth century. It is located in a former Episcopal palace dating from the seventeenth century that was designed by Jules-Hardouin Mansart, one of the architects who worked on the palace of Versailles.
In 1894, Pierre Briguiboul the son of a local Castres painter and collector bequeathed three paintings by Goya to the museum thus establishing its link to Spain. In 1949, prestigious Spanish works from the reserve collection of the Louvre Museum joined the inventory and reaffirmed the Spanish connection. Since then, the acquisition policy practiced by the City and the museum has regularly enriched this remarkable collection. The purchase of the Gaudi series by Joan Miró came from the wish to reinforce the representation of twentieth century Spanish art within the collection. The Goya Museum also owns the four series of Goya engravings. These however, are on public display in rotation for reasons of security.
