A cultural approach to religious art
What is the connection between a Roman Virgin Child, a statuette of a soldier found in a Chinese tomb, an Egyptian coffin and a Burmese Buddha?
Unlike traditional fine arts muséums, the Gard Secular Museum of Religious Art creates a dialogue between objects that are seldom seen together.
If they can be appreciated for their esthetic qualities, all of these objects that stem from different cultures and beliefs no longer have the same connotations for many of us. The museum invites visitors to contemplate the exceptional examples of religious art through a secular lens which gives them a new meaning.
The Knight’s House
This exquisite medieval residence, classified as a Monument Historique (national monument), might have (according to popular legend) accommodated the Knights Templars on their return from the Holy Land. A thorough renovation has restored this superb site to its former glory that today serves as a backdrop for this innovative musem’s collection.
