The museum takes its name from the first President of the Friends of the Villefranche and Bas Rouergue Society founded in 1913. Over the years, the association built up a number of collections based on local history. A first museum was created. From 1963, the Commune stepped in and a project to enlarge the existing institution was launched. Since 2002, the museum has been designated Musée de France.
The museum has assembled a very varied permanent collection : mineralogy, prehistory, Gallo-Roman archaeology, baroque art and furniture from the town’s Black Penitent’s chapel, dermatology and medicine from the nineteenth century and local folk art. A collection of indigenous art from Oceania runs alongside the local works. The archaeology room has been recently renovated.
