Musée Régional de Géologie Pierre-Vetter (Geology)
Decazeville | 12
The municipal museum is unfortunately closed to the public for an indefinite period. The museum nevertheless strives to work for the dissemination of scientific culture and geological heritage through events “beyond the walls” such as temporary exhibitions, conferences and field trips with geologists.
At the heart of the old coal basin of Decazeville, the museum’s collections primarily present the geological richness of Aveyron, in particular through the many plant fossils discovered during mining. These fossils are the remains of the coal forest, a landscape typical of the Carboniferous period when coal was formed.
The collections and documentation also reflect the era of coal. Various objects and models illustrate the geology of the Basin, including a remarkable 19th century model that was shown at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
