Palais-musée des Archevêques de Narbonne (Palace of the Archbishops)
Narbonne | 11
Former home of the archbishops, the Palais Vieux is made up of sumptuous spaces. It is currently undergoing an overall renovation and re-structuring plan aimed at revitalising the visit and presenting the prehistoric, medieval archeology and art collections as part of a new scientific and cultural project. These spaces, comprising the former Madeleine Chapel and the Roman room with its remarkable eighteenth-century painted ceiling are therefore not accessible at the moment.
The visit to the Palais Neuf (The New Palace), furnished between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, allows visitors to discover the former archbishops’ living quarters and the rich art collections found within (seventeenth and eighteenth century ceramics, paintings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century European schools, furniture and a large collection of paintings from the Orientalist movement). The spaces and their decor are themselves extraordinary and are well worth visiting.
The Treasure that is the cathedral also houses some amazing artwork starting from the Carolingian period and going through to the modern period that bears witness to
the splendour of the archbishops of Narbonne.
